- Most geothermal fields in Taiwan are located at mountainous areas. It is very important to avoid possible environmental disasters during the geothermal exploitation and operation stages. In this paper, we proposed an “environmental geological assessment” method which combines the use of both environmental geology map and environmental geomorphology map. Five factors are considered in the evaluation process, including flooding, debris flow, bank erosion, debris slide, and landslide. By using proposed method, two significant findings at Chinlun geothermal area are described as follows: (1)Low-hazard zones at Bingmao site are relatively sparse and smaller, and thus are unfavorable for land utilization. Low-hazard zones can be enlarged by implementing counter measures to flooding hazard. (2) Two low-hazard zones are identified near Chinlun hot spring site. The south zone is larger when compared with the northern one, and is deemed more suitable for power plant development.
